Summary: This study examines the change in the environment experienced by fourteen pupils, when transferred from a traditional Swedish lower secondary school to an alternative school environment, a special day-school. The aim of the study is a) to describe and analyze the experiences of the pupils, their parents and the form masters, b) to make a comparative analysis of the traditional lower secondary school period and the special day-school period, c) to draw conclusions on the basis of some theoretical perspectives on the results of the study concerning conditions for a developing interaction between the school environment and the pupil.
